Choosing a deck stain

Monday, May 12, 2014

If you follow me on instagram, you know that we did a little deck staining this weekend. We opted to start with the horizontal uppers first, planning to do the floor and fence later. Our original plan was to do everything dark, but once we had the slats done we thought that maybe the floor would be too hot on our feet if it were dark. We had a couple of ideas like doing the floor another colour, or doing a border in the dark with the floor a walnut or something, but I thought I'd throw it out here to see what you thought.

As an FYI, the white part of the house you see there will be covered in stone and the windows will be redone.

The colour of the dark uppers is Charcoal by Wood-Shield Beauti-Tone (it shows a bit darker on the wood in my opinion)

What would you do?

  1. I'm not very good at this stuff, but I agree that the super dark stain may be hot on the feet! Looking good already, though!!

  2. this is going to be good!
i cant help though, we just unstained (stripped) out deck to let it fade to grey on it's own.

my first thought was dark with an outdoor rug
sure you have to roll it up every night, not fun, but might be a good play surface?

    dark also shows dusty feet!

    peace out!

Yes, dark shows the dirt & mud. I liked the middle farthest left colour with the above suggestion of a dark outdoor rug. Good luck with whatever you choose!

  5. Hmmm, tough one, maybe Honey bee? (top left), but I'm drawn to grey colors. I'm interested to see how it turns out!

  6. This is a huge dilemma for me, which is why my decks are still unstained! And I have a huge fear of getting into something that is going to require annual maintenance. I can't wait to see what you choose!
